Advancing circular healthcare: from sterilisation wrap to 3D printing filament
Van Straten Medical and O&M Halyard Europe announce cooperation to create GO 3D filament made from recycled HALYARD* sterilisation wrap
Brussels, Belgium, De Meern, The Netherlands – Van Straten Medical (VSM) and O&M Halyard (HyD), a global provider of sterilisation wrap solutions, have entered into an agreement to collaborate on circular approaches for sterilisation wrap in the European market. The agreement formalises a strategic cooperation focused on enabling the circular use of HALYARD* sterilisation wrap into 3D printing filament increasing applications made from medical waste streams by at least 15%.
At the heart of this collaboration is GO 3D filament, a high-quality 3D printing material produced from recycled hospital HALYARD* sterilisation wrap.
From hospital material to new applications
HALYARD* sterilisation wrap is a single-use polypropylene material widely used in hospitals to maintain the sterility of instruments and instrument sets.
Through this circular value chain:
- Renewi collects used HALYARD* sterilisation wrap from hospitals
- GreenCycl (partly owned by Renewi) converts the material into high-quality recycled polypropylene (rPP).
Van Straten Medical converts the rPP into GO 3D filament.This approach enables the conversion of used healthcare waste into valuable secondary raw material. The resulting GO 3D filament has been developed for use in additive manufacturing applications, including functional technical components.
Collaboration across the value chain
The partnership between O&M Halyard Europe and Van Straten Medical brings together complementary expertise across the value chain.
By collaborating on technical features, both parties aim to support a consistent understanding of material characteristics, processing considerations, and potential applications. O&M Halyard contributes its expertise in sterilisation wrap materials, while Renewi and GreenCycl provide the recycling infrastructure and know-how required to collect and process used materials at scale and Van Straten Medical lead the conversion into filament.

Renewi zet samen met partners ziekenhuisafval om in circulair 3D‑printmateriaal
Renewi werkt samen met Van Straten Medical, O&M Halyard Europe en GreenCycl (deels eigendom van Renewi) aan een circulaire oplossing voor gebruikt sterilisatiedoek uit ziekenhuizen. De samenwerking maakt het mogelijk om dit afval om te zetten in hoogwaardig 3D‑printmateriaal: GO 3D filament, geproduceerd uit gerecycled HALYARD* sterilisatiedoek, met als doel het aantal toepassingen van medische afvalstromen met 15% te verhogen.
Van ziekenhuisafval naar 3D-printmateriaal
HALYARD* sterilisatiedoek is een polypropyleenmateriaal dat eenmalig gebruikt wordt in ziekenhuizen om instrumenten steriel te houden. Na gebruik wordt het doorgaans verbrand. In deze samenwerking krijgt het materiaal nieuw leven in een circulaire keten:
- Renewi zamelt de gebruikte HALYARD* sterilisatiedoek in bij ziekenhuizen
- GreenCycl (mede-eigendom van Renewi) verwerkt dit tot gerecycled polypropyleen (rPP)
- Van Straten Medical zet het rPP om in GO 3D filament
Zo wordt zorgafval omgezet in een bruikbare secundaire grondstof. Het filament kan worden toegepast in 3D‑printprocessen, bijvoorbeeld voor functionele technische onderdelen.
Samenwerking in de keten
De aanpak brengt partijen uit de volledige keten samen: van producent en gebruiker tot inzameling, recycling en herverwerking. O&M Halyard levert kennis van sterilisatiematerialen, terwijl Renewi en GreenCycl zorgen voor inzameling en verwerking op schaal. Van Straten Medical ontwikkelt en produceert het filament.
Door samen te werken ontstaat meer inzicht in materiaaleigenschappen, verwerking en toepassingen, wat bijdraagt aan de verdere ontwikkeling van circulaire oplossingen.
Stap richting circulaire zorg
Het initiatief sluit aan bij de groeiende aandacht in de zorgsector voor efficiënter gebruik van grondstoffen, minder inzet van nieuwe fossiele grondstoffen en het verminderen van afval.
Deze samenwerking laat zien hoe zorgafval opnieuw kan worden ingezet als grondstof voor nieuwe toepassingen. Zo helpt het initiatief om grondstofafhankelijkheid te verkleinen en beschikbare materialen beter te benutten.
Tegelijkertijd blijft verdere validatie nodig om te bepalen waar en hoe het materiaal veilig en effectief kan worden toegepast, met name binnen de gereguleerde zorgomgeving.
